Opportunities // How to: Pick Your Word of the Year

By now, plenty of people have chosen their word of the year. A word to live by and help them keep progressing. Last year, my word was conquer. But as I entered 2019, I still wasn’t completely sure what my word was going to be. It came to me while I was working in my planner. I remember thinking about how I wanted to create the make the most of the opportunities that came into my life this year. Not only that, but to create my own opportunities and not let anything get in the way. Then in came to me.Ladies and gents, I present to you. My 2019 Word of the Year: Opportunities.

In case you haven’t noticed or don’t follow me on Twitter/Facebook, the word Opportunites has come up in a lot of frequent posts. Or more specifically: #2019Opportunites And now you know why!

Let Me Explain It

For the past few years, I have been a hardcore pessimist. It’s not good for my healthy – mentally or emotionally – and because of it, I rarely ever complete what I’ve set out for. I wanted to change that this year and be somebody I can be proud of. That’s when I knew I had to change the way I was viewing life: so negatively.

For the past few weeks, I have been working on the things that I say inwardly and outwardly. I have been turning my negatives into positives. Let me just say that this has not been an easy task, but it has more than changed the way I feel about myself.

I want to create opportunities for myself this year. What I mean is, you cannot succeed until you try. And it you try and fail, then you either try again or the opportunity was not meant for you.

But I do not want to approach an opportunity with a negative mind set, nor do I want to leave with one. I want to be able to accept when things don’t go according to plan and soar in the clouds when things go right.

Last Year…

Last year, when I chose the word Conquer, I believe I went about choosing my word in the wrong way. I was piling a lot of goals and resolutions onto myself. Ones I knew I’d never make and ones that would add tons of stress and sleepless nights.

It’s never too late to start your journey. So I wanted to leave you with a few tips to finding your own word of the year.

  • Finding your word is a strategy game that only you can play. It’s all about internalizing and asking yourself the right questions and giving the right answers.
  • Ask yourself where are you now? What brings you the most joy? What isn’t serving you?
  • Now, ask yourself where do you want to be this time next year? What do you want to do more of and what do you want to do less of?
  • Finally – ask yourself “How am I going to get there?” What word will be the breadcrumbs that lead you there?

Have you chosen your word of the year? If you have, what is it and why did you choose it?
